How much confident are you in your known languages? Sorry, my question to my dear reader must be , how do you measure your /someone else’s confidence on languages? Is it just the way a person speaks? Or is it purely based on the particular knowledge of that language? Too many questions to start with. I am just brushing up your mind with some ‘go to questions’ which can be answered easily after a while’s thought. Well, you may have your own points to support your take on the questions. But, to know what’s going on in my mind, you’ll have to go through the whole article.
I’ll tell you about a man who took language seriously but did not care about the accent. I’ll be wrong if I totally say that he didn’t work on his accent, but his weakness over accents did not stop him from achieving anything in life. Mr. Sen was a Bengali gentleman, born and brought up in the city of joy, Kolkata. Naturally, his mother tongue was Bengali and he did his schooling as well college from state board. But, once he stepped out from his educational sphere ,he got to understand the importance of the other languages – Hindi and English.
Mr. Sen knew English, as it was his second language in his school, but Hindi was not at all his cup of tea. He loved Bollywood movies, and therefore from there he tried to learn the basic Hindi. He started understanding the language and gradually he knew how to speak in this language. Definitely, Mr. Sen couldn’t take up the accent perfectly, but any how he managed to speak to other people and understand them. Both Hindi and English was tough for him, but be never lost the confidence which was inbuilt in his own self.
With little knowledge about two different language, Mr. Sen went up to appear for an interview. That was his first ever official place, where he could be marked based on his linguistics. Mr. Sen did not lose the confidence and went their with high boosted up energy. Finally, he went inside and faced the two senior-most person of that company. They asked him various questions in English and Hindi. The star point of him was, he did not dodge a single question, and answered whatever little he knew with confidence. And yes! He aced it and he was selected for the job.

Selection is not the final factor for any job. One needs to stick to it with his/her strength and capability. Knowledge in a particular field is important to carry out the responsibilities of that assigned post- this was totally believed by Mr. Sen. He knew his subject and his area of job well. The only weakness was his accent. He coped with the language way too much to deal with the necessities, but the accent remained a problem. Day by day, he improved in it, but couldn’t ace it totally as his other colleagues.
Many taunted him for his this disability, but he never cared for such ‘taunts’, as he knew what can he actually do to earn respect in life. The minimum requirement of understanding and making others understand to fix a deal was fulfilled by his limited strength on accent. The hope and trust which was within him never dropped down. Whatever difficulty he faced in life for his limitations, he tried to overcome that and proceed further. No negative vibe could stop him from reaching his goal. I guess the best part of his life was when he decided not to take others’ words seriously. That’s important my reader. You too should not lend your ears to the unimportant trash of our surroundings.
After about 10-15 years, he became the head of his department. No one could stop him from his achievement, not even his poor accent. He opened many eyes and showed it to people that to gain success in life, one needs to be perfect in his particular area. Education is way too much important than the medium of conversation. I’ll surprise you, my reader, by saying that it’s a true incident and not just a story. This has happened not only to one person, but many out there have showcased themselves with the strength in their field of specialization, with their limitations in their medium of language.
Well, I won’t say accents are of no use, it is absolutely very important if you are dealing with language. It is itself a subject and to find success in it, one’ll have to be confident about what s/he is speaking. Bullying others for not pronouncing a certain word correctly is something which demeans the character of the one who is in this negative practice. Dragging down someone’s respect, won’t help you in gaining respect. Instead, let’s help each other to know more languages on this earth. Everyone have their own strengths and weaknesses. We must try to focus on our strengths and eventually no one can stop us from anything!
